For centuries San Cataldo has been Lecce's city's sea-port. Next to the light house, the remains of the pier that dates back to the Romans Emperor Adriano are still visible. Between the 19th and 20th century, it slowly became the seaside resort for the citizen of Lecce, connected to the city by one of the first tram-lines. Once the marsh had been drained and vigorous pinewood planted, seaside resort settlements and residential villas were built. To the north of San Cataldo we can find the oasis of Rauccio, recuperated and protected by the city council. Towards the south, the natural oasis of the Cesine and so forth towards the famous route that leads to Otranto. In the immediate hinterland of San Cataldo there is a tourist airport and a fully equipped golf course. In the country side to the north and south the fascinating landscape of the fortified farms and farms towers connected "within sight" of each other and with the numerous salentini centres, like Otranto and Lecce. You must visit the fortified city of Acaya with its beautiful castle recently restored, situated a few kilometres from San Cataldo.
